Valsana Hotel Arosa: A Sustainably Built Ski Resort in Arosa Exuding a Chic Yet Laid-Back Vibe
The hotel closes in spring and autumn.
If you’re looking to take your recycled polyester salopettes on vacation, head to the snow-dusted peaks of Arosa and ski into Switzerland’s sustainably built-and-run Valsana Hotel. The CO2 neutral and Green Globe-certified property is the latest from the Tschuggen Hotel Group and is everything you’d expect of an alpine chalet. It’s hemmed in by pine-flecked forests, glittering lakes and stately summits laced with 225 kilometers of skiable slopes.
The architecture and décor take their cues from the great outdoors, with oak parquet floors, hand-painted botanical artwork and generous windows and balconies overlooking the unspoiled landscape. Leather armchairs, vintage pieces and a 14th-century French fireplace make the lobby just as cosy as the 40 guest rooms and nine family-size apartments — open year-round — with Aztec throws, kitchenettes and bathtubs. The beds are fitted with 100% natural Elky Natur mattresses, and each room has a mobile phone shield to reduce radiation around the bed.
One of the most innovative features of the hotel is its ice battery — a cutting-edge system that heats the entire complex without any oil or electric heating. Geothermal probes feed energy into a giant 860,000-litre water tank fitted with internal pipes carrying a water-glycol mixture. When the heat pumps draw heavily on this energy, the water freezes into a block of ice; the waste heat recovered from around the hotel is then fed back into the tank to thaw it. If more heat is generated than consumed, the water warms back up to 15°C — ready to start the cycle again. Clean, clever, and fossil-fuel free.
Other earth-friendly practices include complimentary shuttle service for travelers arriving by railway; locally sourced food and wine; and organic body care products in the rooms and spa. Bikes are also free to borrow (EV bikes are available to rent), which are perfect for exploring the charming Swiss scenery in Arosa’s warm weather months.
Restaurant Twist and the Valsana Lounge & Bar open from mid-June to mid-September each season. Make sure you find time to raise a glass in front of the firewood — sometimes with live music, sometimes with a DJ.
The 800-square-metre spa offers panoramic views of mountains and woodland that connect body and mind to nature, with a heated pool, steam bath and saunas gazing out onto the forest. Ask about the bespoke treatments, massages and detox rituals — they are not to be missed. Yoga classes run Tuesday to Sunday, rotating between Morning Flow, Balance Flow, Sunset Flow and Slow Flow, so pick your favourite or try them all.
Right across from the hotel, an indoor tennis centre with two carpet courts awaits. Book a session with a coach on request, or let younger guests loose in the play area, with a trampoline, table tennis and table football.
Beyond the slopes, the hotel's activity programme is designed for guests who stay a full week and never want for something new — each activity is complimentary one day a week, and the team will be happy to share the current schedule with you.
The calendar of events makes the most of every open month. July typically brings the Arosa Village Market, when the village centre transforms into a colourful festival for locals, second-home owners and guests alike. Jazz Days carry the spirit of New Orleans up into the Alps; Swiss National BBQ Day calls for a good apéro and the right soundtrack; and the Arosa Classic Car sees vintage wheels race past the Valsana just metres from where you sit. With 76 curves, 422 metres of altitude difference and 7.3 kilometres of legendary road, expect elegant classic cars and high-octane action infused with cosmopolitan flair.
