Paraiso Escondido is a Secluded Paradise in the South of Portugal - Perfect for Slowing Down
Paraiso Escondido means "hidden paradise" in Portuguese. This family-run hotel with only 10 rooms is a real hidden gem with panoramic views of the wild Alentejo countryside. Imagine the scent of eucalyptus, the chirping of cycads, and the warm rays of the sun on your skin. It is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the beautiful things in life. Owner Berny Serrao, who grew up in Mozambique and traveled the world with her husband before settling here, has found her "stolen Africa."
Living in harmony with nature is the driving force behind this beautiful property set among rolling hills. From the main building, large windows open onto terraces overlooking the breathtaking landscape. The luxurious rooms and suites feature wooden furniture and fine fabrics. Soft, cheerful colors and African and Asian artifacts define the interiors. Contemporary design combines with a neo-colonial style. All rooms have their own terrace. Those who want extra privacy choose the detached bungalows on stilts, which are just a five-minute walk from the main building.
Sustainability runs deep in the ethos of Paraiso Escondido. The property harnesses solar energy to heat its water and offers vehicle charging stations for guests arriving by electric car. Rainwater is carefully collected and recycled into the on-site lake, which in turn irrigates the lawns and the organic vegetable garden. In the kitchen, only fair-trade organic coffee is served, using recyclable and compostable capsules.
A commitment to wellbeing extends to every corner of the property. Bathroom amenities are eco-friendly, never tested on animals, and provided in refillable single-use dispensers rather than small disposable plastic bottles. Organic enzymes are used to break down food and human waste in the septic tanks, and the property is actively working to reduce its use of chlorine-based products. The iconic Yoga Studio, meanwhile, has been crafted from upcycled office containers clad in cork — a material native to the Alentejo region — giving new life to what might otherwise have been waste. And in the spirit of supporting the local community, Paraiso Escondido proudly partners with Alma da Nossa Gente, a local co-operative whose sustainably produced jams grace the breakfast table.
The yoga studio sits on the highest point of the property, offering breathtaking views across the Alentejo countryside — a perfect spot to watch the sunrise, meditate, or simply be still. It can be used privately or reserved for groups of up to 15 people with exclusive use of the entire property. For those seeking a creative escape, Art & Painting workshops can also be organised for small or large groups of up to 15 people.
Relax by the wood-burning fireplace in the lounge, cool off in the pool, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul in the yoga studio. Hike or walk through the beautiful landscape of eucalyptus and cork trees that surrounds the retreat's grounds. Or catch the waves at the beach, which is only a 15-minute drive away.
Right on the doorstep of Paraiso Escondido lies the world-famous Rota Vicentina — 750 km of walking paths along the South West Coast of Portugal. The Historical Way winds inland through beautiful villages and timeless country landscapes, while The Fishermen's Trail follows the clifftops with spectacular views out to the Atlantic Ocean.
For those drawn to the water, canoeing or kayaking down the river Mira is an experience not to be missed.
