Riad Siwan: A Restored 19th-Century Palace Offering Panoramic Medina Views and Moroccan Craftsmanship in Marrakech

7 Suites | 1 Pool | 1 Rooftop Terrace

Hidden within the labyrinthine alleys of Marrakech, Riad Siwan was once the 19th-century palace of the Khaloufi family. Local craftsmen from all over Morocco were brought in to restore the original plaster sculptures, the 4-meter-high cedar wood doors, and the intricate sculptured ceilings, all while integrating modern comforts like rain showers, heating, and a naturally sun-heated pool. The typical Riad structure is designed to maintain coolness in the heat, adapting naturally to the climate.

Every curtain, fabric, and nearly all the furniture and lighting were custom-made in Marrakech for Riad Siwan. The art and photographs found throughout have been curated from the owners' extensive travels, giving each space its own unique feel. In the Salón, for example, you’ll find colors inspired by Marrakech’s landscapes: the city’s signature red, the warm ochre tones of Morocco, and the sunlit yellow hues of Africa. An internal garden with a soothing fountain is central to the riad’s design, and during cooler months, a fireplace adds warmth while glass doors allow views of the garden.

Riad Siwan offers 7 individually designed suites, each with its own distinctive style, comfort, and atmosphere. Locally crafted furnishings and décor are featured in every room, including marble, polished granite, and traditional Moroccan tadelakt bathrooms. Several rooms also boast private terraces and glass doors to create an indoor-outdoor feel, allowing guests to enjoy the garden’s beauty year-round.

For a moment of pure indulgence, Fatima, the riad’s expert masseuse, offers treatments using natural Moroccan products, including massages, facials, and body scrubs—all available in the privacy of your suite.

Beyond comfort, Riad Siwan is committed to its community. Since 2007, it has supported the Association Education For All (AEFA), providing education for girls from the High Atlas Mountains, and contributing to rebuilding efforts following the 2023 earthquake. The riad also supports local child protection initiatives and prioritizes sourcing goods from women-led businesses.

For an unforgettable stay, hosts Maryk and Cees curate tailored excursions: explore the Medina with a local guide, and hike the High Atlas. Visit Lake Takerkoust on a Tuesday to experience the weekly Berber souk, or enjoy a traditional Berber lunch with a local family in the Ourika Valley. From there, explore the Anima Gardens or a nearby ecological saffron farm. For the adventurous, sidecar tours, hot air balloon rides, or day trips to the coast are just a few of the experiences that await.

Like stepping into a storybook. The Riad was our little oasis in the historic Medina neighborhood of Marrakesh. Meticulously clean, beautifully designed. We were swooning long before we even reached the terrace, which is a bit higher than most surrounding buildings so the view couldn’t be better. The breakfast was delicious and filling each morning. Very unlike us, we ended up coming back to the hotel for their Moroccan dinners most nights because the food and service was so delicious and authentic. Khalid the hotel manager was incredibly hospitable and helped introduce us to Marrakesh. Another standout was their attendant Amine. Amine took amazing care of us throughout our stay and quickly felt like a friend. We now wish we could take Amine with us wherever we travel! [...]

We booked Riad Siwan through Mr&Mrs Smith, not quite sure what to expect on our first visit to Morocco and our first riad. I work in hospitality, so my expectations are high. I’ve also traveled all over the world, and my brother, staying at the riad with me, previously worked at a luxury hotel. We We booked Riad Siwan through Mr&Mrs Smith, not quite sure what to expect on our first visit to Morocco and our first riad. I work in hospitality, so my expectations are high. I’ve also traveled all over the world, and my brother, staying at the riad with me, previously worked at a luxury hotel. We were both completely blown away by our wonderful experience, among the best hospitality we have ever had. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of. We got to the riad shortly after midnight and were welcomed and taken to our room with an offer to go up and see the view from the terrace. We woke up on our first morning after breakfast hours ended, but when we emerged from our room the manager, Khalid, told us breakfast was right this way and we couldn’t have been more surprised and thrilled that they kept it for us. The food was amazing, we had the three course dinner menu on two nights of our stay and breakfast each morning. We appreciated the rotating breakfast items and the eggs made to order. Be sure to make it home for sunset so you can enjoy evening drinks on the wonderful terrace! Amine, in particular, was an attentive, friendly, and kind staff member whenever we needed anything. He even carried chairs and a small table up to the very top of the terrace so we could be more comfortable while we enjoyed rooftop mojitos during sunset. I look forward to hopefully staying again, and was truly impressed by the service. [...]

Two nights in the heart of Marrakesh. This Riad is very beautiful, with so much love for detail. Everything was arranged, from drinks on the rooftop to guide and transfers to any place in Marrakesh - we just had to mention a destination and they took care of everything else. Outstanding service - thank you!
